Hello, my name is Maniza. My course is B.com (Hons), and I am in my first year. At GAEE JMI, I’m part of the Marketing Team, currently working as a Graphic Designer. I am an artist who loves sketching but just for fun. I never considered it as a career option because it brings me joy and helps me relax, and I didn’t want to turn that into a job.

My area of interest lies in the business world— I’m always curious about how it works. I chose business as a major because it covers a wide range of disciplines (i.e., finance, economics, accounting, and marketing) that I believe are essential in life. These subjects can also serve as a foundation for many other fields!

Why Jamia Millia Islamia?

As we all know, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is a globally recognised central university that has been accredited A++ by NAAC (the highest grade given by NAAC) in 2021. It is well known for the high quality of education it provides to its students, and it was ranked sixth among the country’s “Top 10 Universities” in the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2021.

Along with academics, it offers numerous opportunities for personal development and growth. It is a well-known university in India that is also recognised internationally.

What I love about my course:

So far, I’m enjoying every aspect of my course. Everything is great: the people, the teachers, the subjects. One of my favourite aspects of my course is that it covers all of the subjects and topics that I have always wanted to study— marketing, finance, statistics, human resources, business law, management, and so on.

Everything is covered, so there is no need to take a separate course for any of the subjects. Also, unlike other undergraduate (UG) courses at Jamia, B.com does not require you to take any subsidiary subjects. It is entirely focused on commerce and business— which is a huge benefit!

    My  entrance exam preparation experience:

I had my entrance exam scheduled for mid-August, so I began studying in June– right after I filled out the admission form. I did not enrol in any entrance test coaching classes. Instead, I studied for the exam on my own because self-studying is more effective for me. Taking more and more classes only added to the stress in my head, so I decided to prepare for the exam on my own.

Dr Shafiq-ur-Rehman’s “JMI Entrance Exam Guide” was helpful to me. One of my cousins, a JMI alumni, suggested it for the preparation. The book includes a brief introduction and has separate practice questions for each topic. It also has previous year’s question papers and answers keys. Usually, the question papers are from the last two years.

I didn’t set a specific time of day for studying. Instead, my study hours were flexible, with appropriate breaks in between. Breaks are super important.

For the logical reasons section, I used YouTube to understand the patterns and tricks for solving them. However, for other topics, I devised my own patterns and tricks because I felt the ones taught by others were too complicated and could be simplified. Logical reasoning is all about testing your brain’s ability to solve problems, so if you can think of a simpler way to answer a question, always try it.

I focused on solving as many questions as I could about all of the topics. Along with the preparation, I made sure to engage in other activities to keep my brain stimulated and motivated. Whenever I felt like I was losing motivation, I just put my books down and did something else to clear my mind, and then I went back to my studies. Over time, I’ve realised that it’s not how many hours you study as it is how much you learn.

You could spend an entire day studying for something and only remember 1/4th of it. So, instead of focusing on the number of your studies, ensure that you focus on the quality. I took short notes for the general awareness section and wrote all of the necessary formulae for mathematics. Making cheat sheets on logical reasoning also helps with last-minute revision. That’s how I aced it!

Tips to ace your admission test:

    1. Attempt your paper in this order – GENERAL AWARENESS ➡ENGLISH ➡LOGICAL REASONING ➡MATHEMATICS.
    2. Work on your speed: Imagine you know the answers to almost all of the questions but cannot attempt them due to time constraints. Wouldn’t you be disappointed? To avoid this, work on increasing your speed. Practice mathematics calculations daily to master the art of speed.
    3. Double check your question numbers: Always check the question number twice before marking your answer on the OMR sheet.
    4. Guessing Games are a Big NO: Do not play the guessing game. If you don’t know the answer, just leave the question blank and move on to the next. Don’t risk losing any marks.
    5. Don’t take Generation Awareness lightly: Take the General Awareness section seriously because it covers the majority of the paper ( i.e., nearly 40 questions), and many of them have questions about current events. So, keep an eye on what’s going on around you. Read the newspaper every day or subscribe to a reputable newsletter to stay up to date.
    6. Follow the trend: As the cut off for the result is usually kept in the range of 50-60, try to answer at least 60-70 questions correctly (as seen in the previous years).

What I wish I knew about the preparatory process:

    1. To work on improving my speed.
    2. That current affairs is an important topic in general awareness part.
    3. That synonyms and antonyms hold quite an importance in the exam.

What to expect on exam day:

Your entrance exam day will be something you’ll never forget for the rest of your life. Stress, anxiety, and excitement before the exam, followed by relief, satisfaction, and joy afterwards, are truly overwhelming. You’ll have to arrive at the exam location at the scheduled time. I would advise you to arrive early to avoid any last-minute hassle. You never know— one minor hiccup could completely ruin your day. Hence, make every effort to avoid such an incident.

Also, scrutinise the JMI Prospectus and visit the website regularly for updates and information. Plan your day meticulously a day before the exam (i.e., how you will get to the venue, who will accompany you, etc.) and prepare all of your required material a day before as well. So that if anything is missing, you will have time to make arrangements. Carry a water bottle, an extra mask, 2-3 ball pens, 2-3 copies of your admit card and two identification proofs.

Before you leave the house, double-check everything. Staff members will direct you to your exam hall when you arrive at the exam centre. There will be Invigilators present in your exam hall. Pay close attention to the instructions given by the invigilators.

When the exam begins, you will be given the question paper and an OMR sheet. Fill out all of the information on the OMR sheet and all other documents exactly as directed by the Invigilator. Start your exam by taking a deep breath. Make a point of keeping track of the time. Before filling out the OMR sheet, carefully mark the answers and double-check the question numbers. Give it your all, and don’t worry about the results.
